Rolling down Hwy 41…

This has been a strange week. There has been some loss, my coband’s cousin passed away.  There has been new life, my former colleague had her baby. These events happened on the same day.  A good friend is leaving for New York city and friends are soon coming into town for a wedding.  It’s the cycle of life that has its ups and downs.

Today is the last day of my 30. Not my thirties, just my 30. So it seems a good time to maybe just 8. Drift.

I am working at a new job these days.  I have gone from working for an architect to working at the best graphic design/strategic marketing firm in Tallahassee.  It is a positive and productive place.  My first day of work I felt like I had been there for years, and I mean that in the best possible way.  I am such a newb to the branding and graphic world, but there is so much overlap in design.  I am excited to be a ‘designer.’  Interior design was a small box for me.

I am a drifter by nature.  From finance and investments to interior design, graphic design and combining them all through work in sustainability.  I feel so fortunate to have found the wonderful world of design.  I hope the green movement keeps the momentum up  and running.  Drifting… What can I do to keep up my efforts?

  1. Help brand my new office as a local leader in sustainability – can we host our site on a green server?  can we purchase some renewable power?  can we get involved in the city’s schools on solar campaign?  can we get involved in a commercial recycling campaign?  can we help brand and teach others by what we have learned ourselves?  I wonder if there is a ‘green’ printer in town.  I knew and helped implement green practices in our architecture office, but how do we do it at a PR/Graphic design firm?
  2. Start a green committee for the Neighborhood Association board I am on.  I really want to make street signs – like in Sim Van der Ryn’s book Ecological Design, where they made friendly signs to stop people from speeding and put friendly reminders in front of the drains saying “drains to bay” and had a cute picture of a fish.  My neighborhood is close to midtown and there is a great walkable city movement.  But the biggest hurdle are the speeding cars.  We have worked with the city and they put in a crosswalk (that you really take your life in your own hand if you use) and a “your speed limit is [45]” sign.  But what if there were signs to remind people why we don’t speed.  Because, despite the fact we are close to downtown, we are still your neighbors and we want to walk our neighborhood like you walk the suburbs.  So, signs it is.  Happy, friendly signs that remind people that we are all trying to exist together.  I will propose that at the next board meeting.

Today, we lost an hour but gained longer days.  It’s spring and time for rejuvenation.  While we are here drifting, lets make the most of it and be grateful for our loved ones and for good design.

Love,

Rachelle
